Summary
The tale begins with you and your allies reveling in victory. The caravan you've protected has just finished its perilous journey to the trade hub of Yartar. Yet the world remains fraught with peril, and unease lingers. Vast armies are stirring, and the fragile peace of recent years is about to be torn apart. Your group becomes a threat to the dark forces behind the growing unrest. Only through the speed and skill of your blade—on both land and sea—can you hope to survive and prevent the region’s impending doom.
Storyline
The game centers on a typical (for Gold Box adventures) group of six heroes who unwittingly become entangled in a scheme by the Zhentarim to take control of the entire Frontier region. The story, in a general sense, unfolds as follows: The party begins in Yartar, having just protected a caravan from the dwarven fortress of Citadel Adbar (ruled by King Harbromm). While celebrating at a tavern, something is slipped into their food, causing them to lose consciousness and be stripped of all their gold and gear, including the magical longsword one character used to defeat a griffon in Longsaddle. Fortunately, each character had a hidden pouch of coins under their pillow, allowing them to purchase new armor and weapons. By rescuing the NPC Krevish, the party is hired by the Kraken in Yartar to kill a priest of Bane in Nesme, only to learn that this dark cleric was the sole obstacle to the Zhentarim's conquest. They then free the spellcaster Amelior Amanitas from Everlund, a quirky and somewhat distracted wizard who reveals how to stop the Zhentarim. Returning to Yartar, the party is captured and locked up in a hidden Kraken base beneath the city. There, they recover the stolen longsword but must battle four giant squids in a massive tank before making their escape. They must locate four magical statues scattered across the frontier before the Zhentarim, led by General Vaalgamon, can claim them. Finally, they journey to the ruined city of Ascore to end the Zhentarim's plan. Essentially, Zhentil Keep intends to use these statues to create a path through an otherwise impassable desert for their forces. If the party succeeds, they are celebrated as the "Heroes of Ascore," a title that carries over into the sequel.
