Senjou no Valkyria 3: Unrecorded Chronicles, commonly known as Valkyria Chronicles III, is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation Portable. It serves as the third entry in the Valkyria Chronicles series and was launched in Japan on January 27, 2011. A more comprehensive version titled Extra Edition was later released in Japan on November 23, 2011. The game opens with the song Moshimo Kimi ga Negau no Nara, performed by Japanese artist May'n. Set concurrently with the events of the first game, Valkyria Chronicles III functions as a side story, chronicling the experiences of a shunned and disgraced Gallian Army unit during the Imperial invasion of 1935. Unlike the earlier games, which portrayed their heroes in a positive and celebrated light, this installment delves into themes of rejection and the pursuit of atonement. As its slogan suggests, the game recounts "The story of nameless soldiers who, on the brink of despair, altered the course of history." This title marked the first in the series that Sega did not officially translate into English. Nevertheless, a fan-made translation of the Extra Edition was eventually made available in December 2013.
The game is set during the Second Europan War. Gallian Army Squad 422, known as "The Nameless," is a military unit made up of convicts, foreign deserters, and soldiers who have committed offenses. Their identities are erased from official records and they are identified only by numbers. Tasked by the Gallian military with carrying out the most perilous missions that the Regular Army and Militia refuse to handle, they remain resolute, as shown by their motto, Altaha Abilia, which means "Always Ready." The three central characters are No.7 Kurt Irving, an officer wrongfully accused of treason who seeks to clear his name; Ace No.1 Imca, a female Darcsen heavy weapons expert driven by vengeance against the Valkyria who destroyed her homeland; and No.13 Riela Marcellis, a young woman plagued by bad luck, who is unknowingly a Valkyria herself. Alongside their fellow squad members, these three must battle a secretive, mostly Darcsen Imperial force known as Calamity Raven. Since the Nameless are officially non-existent, the Gallian Army uses plausible deniability to deploy them on missions that would otherwise damage Gallia's reputation in the war. While this strategy sometimes benefits them, such as during a successful raid into enemy territory, other orders cause deep emotional pain for some members of the 422nd. One such individual, Gusurg, becomes so furious that he abandons his post and defects to Calamity Raven, drawn by the vision of Darcsen independence championed by their leader, Dahau. Meanwhile, factions within Gallian Army Command attempt to eliminate the Nameless to safeguard their own positions. Pursued by both friend and foe, and with a traitor lurking among them, the 422nd struggle to survive while continuing to support the Gallian war effort. This struggle continues until the Nameless's commander, Ramsey Crowe, who had been confined to house arrest, is escorted to the capital city of Randgriz to present evidence that will clear the squad's name and reveal the true traitor—the Gallian general who falsely accused Kurt of treason.
