The game begins with Marlowe being transported from a helicopter to the front lines. Preston meets his new team and quickly learns from Redford that Bad Company is far more casual than other military units. A barrage of artillery obliterates the convoy, including the team's truck. This is when the player is introduced to the basics: looking around, jumping, crouching, shooting, throwing grenades, and repairing vehicles. Mike-One-Juliet, the dispatch officer, sends Bravo-One Charlie (Preston's team) to eliminate an artillery battery used by the Russians and later to use it to attack the vehicles threatening the Juneau convoy. The team is then tasked with clearing a Russian-held river crossing after the bridge is destroyed. Bravo-One is then sent to secure a Russian-occupied farm before being extracted, but when their helicopter is shot down by anti-aircraft fire, they are ordered to destroy the anti-air positions and raid another Russian-held farm in the Juneau Convoy's path. When the team joins the Juneau convoy, it is hit by another artillery barrage. They barely escape and are sent to disable radar jammers so an airstrike can destroy the artillery. After the airstrike, Bravo-One eliminates any remaining survivors and encounters the Legionnaire Mercenaries, a mercenary group known as the world's most formidable military force. Haggard discovers a gold bar in the uniform of a dead Legionnaire, sparking their interest in the Legionnaire's treasure. On what was supposed to be Redford's final mission before retirement, the team is sent deeper into Russian territory when they come across a house with the Legionnaires' insignia on a sign in front, reading "Acta Non Verba" — Latin for "Action, Not Words." Haggard sends Marlowe inside to investigate. There, Marlowe discovers the first case of gold. The team is given orders to destroy fuel and missile storage facilities and then to meet up with a US Armored Division and escort them into the Russian-held city of Zabograd. Bravo-One Charlie is sent ahead to clear the pass of anti-tank missile launchers and to guide the tanks to the other side of the town where the main assault will occur. The team is then ordered to destroy a Russian radio outpost before it can call for reinforcements, but they arrive too late — the call has already been made and more Russian forces are on the way. Just then, a rocket strikes a nearby US tank, prompting Mike-One-Juliet to send the team to defend it from the enemy reinforcements until more US forces arrive. Mike-One-Juliet then directs them to a harbor with suspicious activity and promises that if they perform well, she might help them leave the company and join a better unit. They arrive at the harbor but find it filled with mercenaries. The team, led by Haggard and driven by the lure of gold, fights their way through, but after searching the bodies, they find nothing. They then spot some trucks and watch them drive off. As they do, a bar of gold falls from the back of one, and they become determined to follow and reclaim the treasure. Soon after arriving at the border of Serdaristan, Bravo-One Charlie spots the trucks crossing the border and realizes they can't follow, as Serdaristan is neutral in the war. Overcome by greed, Haggard runs across the border, "single-handedly invading a neutral country." When questioned about their presence in Serdaristan, Redford tells Mike-One-Juliet it was his idea to eliminate a potential threat. As a result, Redford's tour of duty is extended by another year. This pushes Redford to the breaking point, and he tells the team they're going AWOL. They first destroy three radio transmission towers to cover their tracks. Redford then deduces that the gold is in another harbor. After fighting their way through, they are about to board the Legionnaire's cargo ship when the US Army arrives and captures them. The army sends Bravo-One Charlie on a top-secret mission to enter Serdaristan and capture the President, who they suspect is supplying arms to the Russians. However, the team realizes Serdaristan is no longer neutral when they witness their chopper being shot down by Serdaristani anti-air defenses. Mike-One-Juliet sends them to destroy the emplacements so another chopper can be flown in to extract them with the President once they capture him. Later, Miss July notices heavy activity at the Presidential Palace and sends Bravo-One a laser designator to locate an enemy weapons cache. They navigate through the President's personal golf course and head toward the Presidential Palace. Upon arrival, they find the grounds teeming with Legionnaires. They fight their way in to rescue the President, but when Redford calls for an evac chopper, Mike-One-Juliet informs them that the Army has abandoned them and they're on their own. President Serdar then offers them a personal Mi-24 Hind helicopter to escape from Serdaristan. The team takes the President's helicopter and uses it to dismantle Serdaristan's military infrastructure. Their helicopter soon runs out of fuel, and they arrive at a refueling station. Since there's no fuel source near the helicopter, Marlowe and Haggard are forced to drive an M939 truck carrying fuel to the Hind. Haggard accidentally pours the fuel into the cooling unit, forcing Sweetwater to fix it due to Haggard's mistake. They fend off Serdaristan Army reinforcements, and as several BMD-3s approach, Sweetwater resolves the fuel issue and they escape. The President then asks Bravo-One to take him to Russia for his exile and reveals where the gold is hidden, but the Legionnaire appears in his personal Ka-52 and shoots down the modified Hind. Marlowe wakes up after the crash, only to find his team and the President missing. He attempts to contact Mike-One-Juliet, who guides him to several locations where she believes the team might be. In one of those areas, a video screen shows the Legionnaire interrogating President Serdar and later destroying the camera after discovering it was recording. Marlowe makes his way through a large Russian Army force to reach a monastery at the top of a mountain, where he finds his team didn't actually need rescuing — they had just escaped captivity. Together, they descend the mountain, evading Russian reinforcements as they head toward the sea in search of a boat to escape. After battling tanks, APCs, and a Russian Hind, they find the President in a small port about to be executed by the Legionnaires. The team manages to stop the execution and, with the President, board a boat heading to Sadiz, along the Caspian Sea. The President is exiled to a small island near Sadiz while the team continues their pursuit of the gold. After battling a large number of Middle Eastern Coalition soldiers and tanks, Bravo-One Charlie overhears that the US Army is advancing toward the port of Sadiz, where the gold is stored on the Legionnaire's tanker. The team then destroys two bridges to prevent the Army from reaching the port first. When they arrive, they find the gold stash in a warehouse. As they marvel at the piles of gold, the Legionnaire attacks in his helicopter. They race toward the end of a pier where Sweetwater believes an anti-aircraft gun is located. However, just as Marlowe is about to take control of the VADS, the Legionnaire destroys it. Marlowe finds a M2 Carl Gustav helipad above and with a few precise shots, brings down the Ka-52. They return to the warehouse to find the US Army loading all the gold into trucks. Just as the team is about to leave in disappointment, a US Army Officer notices them and orders them to drive one of the trucks full of "scrap metal" with the convoy. They follow the convoy for a while before taking a side road and speeding away, each discussing how they'll spend their share of gold. The final scene shows the Legionnaire stepping out of his wrecked chopper, his eyes filled with vengeance.
