The winter of 1800 was a harsh one. As the first signs of spring arrived, St. Louis stirred from its winter slumber. The great sailing vessels made their way back up the Mississippi and gathered along the jetty. I was broke, having spent every last cent in the local saloons. It was time to head west once more, to hunt beaver and sell the pelts to my partner, Schwartzbauer the goldsmith. On these trips, I carried only what was essential: a large hunting knife, a strong two-handed axe, and Betty, my trusted rifle with the maple stock. Schwartzbauer had given me a canoe, and I set off on a foggy April morning. I was paddling in silence along the South Platte River when I suddenly heard voices from the shore. Through the trees, I saw a group of Pawnees attacking an old Native American. I reached for Betty and fired. My aim was true. The leader of the Pawnees fell. The others, terrified by "the stick that spits fire," fled at once. I rushed to the old man. He was a Cheyenne chief. I saw he was bound to the earth by a rope tied to a heavy wooden stake. I recognized it as a Cheyenne death rite—an elder would tie himself in this way in enemy land to die as a warrior. The man was near death, with three wounds. He held out a scrap of paper and, in a weak voice, said, "Help me. I am dying. I have lived the life of a warrior, and now I die as one. But I must be buried as one to reach the Happy Hunting Ground. Do this for me, and I will make you rich." Touched by compassion (and, I admit, the promise of wealth), I promised to help. "Take this map. It will lead you to a hidden land. If you are strong and just, brave and careful, clever and kind, you will uncover the secret of your people, the gold mine of Pocohontas. It will be yours, for you will have earned it by saving my soul." With those words, the old man passed away. I built him a grave and returned to my canoe. I followed the rivers and streams for days, as the map instructed. On the seventh morning, at the break of dawn, I entered the land marked on the parchment. I had no idea then of the many adventures that awaited me...
