At the start of the game, players assume the role of Overlord Laharl, a young demon prince who awakens from a two-year slumber to discover that his father, the former king, has died. Determined to reclaim his place as ruler of the Netherworld, Laharl embarks on a chaotic journey, aided by a treacherous servant, a clumsy angel smitten with love, and a group of irritable penguins eager to stir up chaos.
The tale of Disgaea begins with Laharl emerging from an open coffin in his chamber. Etna, one of the castle’s retainers, stands beside him, surrounded by an array of weapons. She informs him that he has been in a deep slumber for two years—longer than he had planned—and that his father, King Krichevskoy, has passed away. Vowing to take back the throne, Laharl discusses his next steps with Etna and his other vassals before heading to Vyers’ fortress. After defeating the demon Vyers, who calls himself the “Dark Adonis” and is later mocked as “Mid-Boss” by Laharl, he encounters Angel Trainee Flonne. Flonne had been dispatched to the Netherworld by Seraph Lamington, the ruler of Celestia, to assassinate King Krichevskoy (who had already died). Troubled by Laharl’s apparent indifference to his father’s passing, the ever-optimistic Flonne joins his group to see if demons are truly capable of love. Watching from the shadows is the suspicious Archangel Vulcanus, who sees Flonne’s actions as betrayal and believes she is working against him. When Etna insists that Laharl pay the wages of the Prinnies she has hired, he decides to target the richest demon nearby—Hoggmeiser at Dinero Palace. After defeating Hoggmeiser, Laharl is about to finish him off when the demon’s son runs out and blocks the attack. Flonne convinces Laharl to show mercy, and he allows them to keep some of their wealth. Impressed by this act, Hoggmeiser joins the party. At one point, Flonne and Etna come across a photo of Laharl in an awkward situation. Laharl calls it a “paparazzi shot,” but the image itself is never shown. A message on the back warns that the photo will be circulated unless Laharl accepts a challenge to fight for the overlordship—effectively holding him hostage. Accepting the challenge, Laharl faces Maderas, a vampire who had been exiled by King Krichevskoy for stealing the monarch’s favorite snack, black pretzels. Maderas exploits Laharl’s two greatest vulnerabilities—his optimism and his attraction to women with alluring figures. Maderas had also been manipulating Etna by controlling her memories, ordering her to kill the prince, though she instead poisoned him and put him into a two-year slumber. In the end, Etna betrays Maderas, and together with Laharl, Flonne, and Mid-Boss, they defeat him. Later that night, Flonne notices a group of Prinnies chanting and leaving the castle. Concerned that his reputation will be ruined if word gets out that his vassals have fled, Laharl chases after them the next morning. Eventually, he encounters Death, and the player learns that Big Sis Prinny is actually Laharl’s mother, who became a Prinny after sacrificing herself to save him.
