Drakengard tells the tale of Caim, a prince without a kingdom, who wages war against the Empire alongside the Union. The Union safeguards the Hierarchs and the Goddess, currently embodied by Caim's sister, Furiae, who is a living representation of one of the four seals that keep the world from collapsing. At the start of the game, Caim is critically injured in a battle with the Empire. During this moment, he encounters a dying Red Dragon who has also been captured. Caim makes a crucial decision: in exchange for their survival, he and the Red Dragon form a binding pact. This agreement permanently ties their lives and souls together, but at a great and irreversible cost. Empowered by the dragon's fiery essence, Caim's thirst for revenge ignites against his enemies. The player takes control of Caim on his journey. The game features three unique combat modes: Aerial, Ground, and Event. In Aerial Combat, Caim rides his dragon into the skies, battling a range of airborne enemies that unleash fireballs—some powerful single shots and others weaker, multi-target attacks. The dragon is highly maneuverable, capable of quickly dodging incoming attacks and turning on a dime. In Ground Combat, the game is played in third-person perspective, typically across vast open environments. Caim's main strength lies in his ability to wield a wide array of weapons found on the battlefield, each imbued with magical abilities. These weapons can be upgraded through repeated use and by defeating enemies. During ground combat, Caim can also summon his dragon to ride and attack enemies from above. Event Combat is similar to Ground Combat but is presented in an isometric view, limited to a single weapon and without the dragon's aid. It is primarily used to advance the story.
