In addition to the new young driver test mode, F1 2012 introduces a fresh "Champions Mode," where the six World Champions competing in the 2012 season — Kimi Räikkönen, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, and Michael Schumacher — are portrayed as classic video game level bosses. Players must challenge and defeat them under race conditions tailored to each driver's strengths. Another new addition is the "Season Challenge" mode. Based on player feedback, Codemasters learned that many only played the game when they had several hours available. To address this, the mode allows for shorter play sessions. In this mode, players begin with a lower-ranked team and, over the course of ten races, can switch teams mid-season depending on their performance and ability to complete objectives. Codemasters also added "One-Shot Qualifying," which gives players just one lap to secure their race position. While the traditional three-stage knockout format is still available, the single 20-minute qualifying session is no longer used in career mode. Additionally, all three practice sessions from a race weekend are no longer an option; instead, only a single one-hour session is provided.
