It's not long from now. The location is New York City. But it's a world most of us would never recognize. This is a society where merely possessing a book is a dangerous crime. Where Firemen arrive not to rescue homes, but to destroy them for the books hidden within. And you, once a loyal Fireman, are now a rebel who cherishes books — and the nation’s most hunted fugitive. An Interactive Fiction game based on the book of the same name. Set as a follow-up to the novel, continuing the story after its conclusion.
You are Guy Montag, a fugitive. Once you bore the symbolic number 451. Once you served as a Fireman. Your role was clear: to shield humanity from the power of books. Books, with their perilous truths, with their facts that could be manipulated and weaponized to tear down. Your duty was to find and burn these books, and so your loyalty lay with the Firemen, who bore the mark of the temperature at which paper ignites: 451. Then you met Clarisse, the girl. To her, books were wonders, to be cherished and recalled, not dreaded. You began to question the teachings of the Firemen, and in doing so, you became... a danger. You witnessed, in horror, as Clarisse and others who revered books were pursued like fugitives by The Hounds: mechanical nightmares that rested, yet did not rest; that existed, yet did not truly live, within softly humming, softly vibrating silver forms. You defied the system and found the Underground: people drawn to words, lured by ideas, yearning for knowledge. Each of them carried a single book, memorized and preserved within them, the last and only record of its existence. As a war raged across America, a conflict too shadowy and brutal to fully grasp, you fled the Firemen and their Hounds and journeyed to... New York. The war is over. With the aid of the Underground, you took on a new face, a new name. You are still Montag, yet no longer the Montag you once were. You remain a fugitive. Now you wait, ready to flee, hidden within Central Park. You have learned that the girl lives. She is in New York, waiting for your aid in a bold mission to save humanity from its own ignorance and terror. You are about to confront the Mechanical Hounds, which patrol the streets of post-war Fifth Avenue. You are about to uncover the hidden threats behind the rebuilt facades of one of the world’s most iconic streets. You are a weapon of liberty. You must steel yourself for the blaze: Fahrenheit 451.
