JumpStart Kindergarten Reading is an educational game designed for children aged four to seven. The game centers around a Rabbit named Hopsalot, who is on a school break and eager to uncover the treasure hidden in his carrot patch. To do so, he needs help from the player. He has six relatives, each holding a clue, and together they set off on a journey. Each visit consists of two parts. For example, when visiting Granny in the icy north, the player is first asked to click on all items that start with a specific letter to melt them. Typically, there are about half a dozen items on the ground, four of which match the required letter. After completing this task, the player moves on to an ice hockey practice. Here, a letter appears on the scoreboard, and hockey pucks with three- and four-letter words slide across the ice. If the word's starting letter matches the target, the player clicks the puck, and if correct, it is shot into the net. If the letter doesn't match, the player clicks the referee, and the puck disappears. After finishing the mini-games, the player receives a clue related to the carrot patch treasure, which is a specific letter. The player then goes to the carrot patch and must identify that letter from a selection, click on it, and a tunnel is dug to that spot, revealing an object and a short animation. Each mini-game focuses on different reading skills. Alfie the Jazz Hamster asks the player to pick rhyming words, Grandad helps match uppercase and lowercase letters, Flash challenges the player to spell or complete words coming from a volcano, and Robbie at the ranch asks the player to determine if a word is real or not.
