MechAssault was the first BattleMech video game released for the Xbox. Created by Day 1 Studios and published by Microsoft, the project began when Denny Thorley from Day 1 Studios reached out to Jon Kimmich at Microsoft to explore the idea of crafting a new BattleTech game specifically designed for console play.[1] *MechAssault* hit shelves in November 2002. Its follow-up, *MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf*, arrived on December 28, 2004. Both titles are set within the expansive BattleTech fictional universe.
MechAssault is set in the BattleTech universe, a science-fiction setting known for its intense battles between human-piloted, heavily armed and armored walking machines known as BattleMechs. The game's story takes place on the inhabited world of Helios, located within the Inner Sphere—a powerful but fractured coalition of rival factions that control vast regions of space. The player takes on the role of a BattleMech pilot, referred to in-game as a "Captain" or "MechWarrior," serving with the elite mercenary unit known as Wolf's Dragoons. The player's unit is contracted to investigate the sudden loss of contact from Helios. Upon arrival, the Dragoons' ship, the Icarus, is attacked and forced to crash-land on the planet's surface. As the story unfolds, the player uncovers the truth: the planet has been overrun by the Word of Blake, a fanatical cult obsessed with technology, now ruled by the ruthless Commander Strader. Guided by the capable Major Natalia and aided by the bumbling Lieutenant Foster, the player wages war against the cult's forces, helps free Helios from their grip, and ultimately eliminates Commander Strader.
