The PlayStation Portable version of Spider-Man 2 employs the same engine as the original 2002 Spider-Man game. As a result, the gameplay remains largely the same, with many of the first game's locations reused, along with its scoring system that evaluates players at the end of each level based on factors like completion time and combo usage. Players can still crawl along walls and swing with web lines, though Spider-Man is limited to moving forward in a straight path. They can also target specific enemies by locking the camera on them and using web attacks. As Spider-Man, players must learn new combo techniques while defending Manhattan from the sinister Doc Ock and other iconic Marvel antagonists. The game features 19 new levels that go beyond the movie's storyline, allowing players to swing, jump, and wall-crawl through interactive 3D environments. With deep gameplay and original story arcs, players encounter settings and characters inspired by the film and unique to the game. In addition to Doc Ock, players face a variety of villains from Spider-Man's legendary Rogue's Gallery, including Mysterio, Rhino, Shocker, and Vulture. Leveraging the PSP's graphical capabilities, Spider-Man 2 delivers stunning 3D visuals and immersive gameplay that surpasses previous handheld Spider-Man titles. Alongside classic moves like wall crawling, web yanking, and capture webbing, the game introduces new techniques such as the "cocoon," "web net," and "heavy web ball."
While walking the streets of the city, Spider-Man notices a group of criminals trying to rob a bank and intervenes to stop them. That evening, after sharing a meal with his friends Mary Jane Watson (whom he secretly loves) and Harry Osborn (who holds a deep grudge against Spider-Man, believing he was responsible for his father's death), Peter notices a van being pursued by the police. He tracks it to the Queensboro Bridge, where the chase results in a major traffic crash. As Spider-Man, he saves multiple civilians and officers in danger before chasing the van to a warehouse, where he discovers gangsters unloading explosives. In the ensuing battle, the explosives cause a large fire, but Spider-Man manages to extinguish the flames and subdue the remaining criminals. Later, Harry introduces Peter to Dr. Otto Octavius, a nuclear physicist working on a fusion power project funded by Oscorp, aiming to supply Manhattan with limitless energy. Octavius quickly bonds with Peter and starts mentoring him. While working with dangerous substances, Octavius uses a high-tech harness equipped with intelligent robotic tentacles. At a public demonstration attended by Peter and Harry, a sudden power surge causes the fusion reactor to become unstable. Octavius refuses to halt the experiment, which leads to a catastrophic meltdown—killing his wife and removing the inhibitor chip that controlled the tentacles. Spider-Man steps in to shut the experiment down, ultimately destroying it. In the aftermath, the AI in the tentacles begins to manipulate Octavius, transforming him into the villain Doctor Octopus, who is determined to finish his work no matter the cost.
