The game features a sparse narrative, with the player only occasionally encountering key story events. Instead, the experience is designed to allow players to craft their own personal journey. Lead developer Alexander Mosolov has emphasized that players are meant to gradually piece together the world's history as they explore its vast expanse. Set in a distant future, the game follows a time when humanity achieved faster-than-light travel through the use of transport gates—essentially wormholes. For decades, this breakthrough ushered in a golden era of prosperity under the rule of the Domain, a central governing body. But 206 years before the game begins, all transport gates suddenly stopped working, throwing humanity into a dark age marked by rampant piracy and the rise of competing factions. This catastrophic event is known as "the collapse." Within the sector—a portion of the Milky Way where the game is set—numerous factions have emerged, each vying for control.
