Tales of Destiny is a sequel to Tales of Phantasia. Much like its forerunner, it follows the conventions of classic Japanese role-playing games, but replaces action-based combat with a turn-based system. Fights occur on individual side-scrolling screens and are reminiscent of fighting games. The player directs the main protagonist, maneuvering him across the battlefield and executing a variety of attacks and combinations. The rest of the party is managed by the game's artificial intelligence, though players can pause the battle at any moment to adjust the combat style of any character.
Long ago, a massive comet struck the world, sending plumes of dust into the atmosphere and plunging the planet into a frigid, shadowed age. Around the same time, the native Aethers uncovered a powerful new energy source within the meteorite’s core, which they called Lens. Through continued study and innovation, they harnessed this energy to build floating cities and inhabit them. However, only a privileged few were granted access to these airborne sanctuaries, while the rest of the population was left behind on the desolate surface, where they came to be known as the Erthers. The game’s story begins when Stahn Aileron, a farm boy turned adventurer in search of glory and excitement, secretly boards the airship Draconis as a stowaway. Discovered by the crew, he is forced into labor as a deckhand. But when a massive enemy force assaults the ship, the crew is quickly overpowered, and Stahn seizes the opportunity to break free amidst the chaos. In his search for a weapon to defend himself, he stumbles upon a storeroom and finds what appears to be a discarded sword. To his surprise, the blade speaks, introducing itself as Dymlos and claiming to be a living Swordian from the Aeth’er Wars. With Dymlos by his side, Stahn battles through the attackers and reaches an escape pod, using it to flee the ship just before it plummets to the ground.
