TMNT3 emphasizes teamwork character growth and control more than any previous console-based Turtles game. Players can take on the role of their favorite Turtle solo or team up with up to three friends earning experience points as they battle Foot Ninjas and iconic bosses from the TMNT universe. These points let players enhance and evolve their Turtles' abilities and traits leading to a wider range of powerful attacks and moves. A new feature in TMNT3 is the Ninja Scroll System which allows players to choose which scrolls to use giving the Turtles access to various special abilities in a strategic way. Teamwork is central to TMNT3 and those who play with friends in multiplayer mode unlock exclusive features like the Cooperative Attack which delivers massive damage to enemies. The impact of this attack varies based on how many players are cooperating from 2 to 4. For more precise control TMNT3 introduces the Target Attack system enabling players to engage in more intuitive and tactical combat. This system allows players to lock onto specific enemies and respond with blocks dodges or counterattacks for smoother and more fluid fighting. The Story Mode supports 1 to 4 players and if fewer than four are playing the remaining Turtles will be controlled by AI. All Turtles can join in on the Cooperative Attack and players can issue commands to the AI-controlled characters.
In Episode 1, the Turtles start by rescuing an elderly person in New York City from cruel Triceratons. After taking out three carriers that are deploying the Triceraton forces, the Turtles go underground to reach Central Park and save their friends Casey and April. Inside the park, Leo, Raph, Mikey, and Don battle the Triceratons, while Professor Honeycutt, known as the Fugitoid and saved from *TMNT 2: Battle Nexus*, helps the Turtles locate where Casey Jones and April O'Neil are being held. Breaking into the Triceraton base, Zaranmon, the Triceraton commander, activates a robot to stop the Turtles and Traximus. Zaranmon's plan fails, and Traximus smashes a chair to bring about change in the clan. In Episode 2, the Turtles come across new tech from Baxter Stockman as Mousers invade the sewers, causing Master Splinter severe ear pain. While defending their sensei, the Turtles fight off the Mousers while keeping him safe. But Master Splinter is captured, and the Turtles use a hovercraft to pursue a moving van. They are stopped by a pair of enemies, one tall and one short, who set up an ambush. After passing them, the Turtles continue their rescue mission, eventually battling Bishop and using throwing stars to break a lock and free Master Splinter. In Episode 3, the Turtles face off against every member of the Foot Clan in a series of missions. Hun, Karai, and Oroku Saki, Shredder's human form, all fall to the Turtles. During the final battle with Saki, he is transformed into Mega Shredder. The Turtles defeat him and are then called before the Utrom council for a tribunal. Scherel, the Utrom controlling Shredder’s body, is convicted for his crimes and banished to a frozen world, while Karai and the others are handed over to the authorities, marking the end of the main game. In the Nightmare chapter, each Turtle experiences a dream and battles various bosses. Completing most of the missions in this chapter leads to the game’s final boss, Ultimate Drako. To unlock the Ultimate Turtle forms using the Gembu scrolls, players must collect scrolls and other items in Free Battle mode.
