The Nintendo DS edition of Tomb Raider: Legend is quite different from its console versions. It keeps the original story and cutscenes intact, but the platforming and environmental puzzles have been reworked into a side-scrolling format with some 3D touches. The game also features occasional motorcycle sequences. Usually, the main action takes place on the top screen, while the bottom screen is used for inventory management, controlled via the stylus. In combat, the lower screen switches to a first-person view, where players must tap enemies to take them down. Like other versions, the gameplay revolves around collecting artifacts in exotic settings; on the DS, players use the microphone to blow dust off them. Although Lara's movement is mostly two-dimensional, the visuals are in 3D, and the environments are often shown from multiple angles, breaking away from the standard side-view typical of the genre.
The story follows the console versions closely. In her quest for the relic, Lara Croft journeys through Japan, Bolivia, England, Kazakhstan, Ghana, and the Himalayas.
