The story follows a straightforward path, primarily conveyed through the opening and closing full-motion video sequences. After the "Material Defender" (voiced by George DelHoyo) has eliminated all the mines in the Solar System from the original game, he halts in the asteroid belt to dock. He is then contacted by Dravis, a high-ranking executive from Post-Terran Mining Corporation, who uses a legal loophole to pressure him into accepting a new assignment or risk losing his reward and facing legal consequences. The Material Defender agrees, and as Dravis insists it's just a reconnaissance mission, his ship is equipped with a prototype warp core. He is then dispatched to clear PTMC's distant space mines beyond the Solar System. The Material Defender teleports to Zeta Aquilae and five other fictional star systems, where he obliterates the mines. In the sixth system, the final mine is embedded deep within a planetoid, later revealed in the closing cutscene to be a massive spaceship. After the ship disintegrates, the Material Defender informs Dravis of his return, but his warp drive fails, causing him to teleport to an unknown location. The scene shifts to that place, showing his damaged ship, crackling with radiation, drifting toward the camera as the words "to be continued..." appear on screen.
