Digimon World: Next Order is a role-playing game that takes place in an expansive open world and is played from a third-person viewpoint. In the game, players assume control of a human character who is supported by two Digimon allies. At the start of the game, players can choose from ten different Digimon to begin their journey. These partners evolve and develop throughout the story by engaging in battles and forming connections with their trainer. Players can strengthen their bond with their Digimon through actions like giving praise, offering criticism, providing food, or giving them items. As they journey through various settings, players complete missions, progress the story by speaking with NPCs, and fight against enemy Digimon they come across. When an enemy is encountered, a real-time battle begins, marked by a circular arena where each Digimon can move freely. The player's Digimon act based on pre-set AI tactics, while the player can pause the action to give commands or use healing items. Players can switch between their two Digimon during battle to issue specific orders or trigger a special fusion evolution where both partners temporarily combine. After each battle, the Digimon gain experience and become stronger. The Japanese version of the game features 217 Digimon that can be collected, with 15 additional creatures added in the Western release, bringing the total to 232.
The game's narrative follows two possible protagonists: Takuto and Shiki, both third-year high school students in Japan. Once a dedicated Digimon enthusiast, Takuto was even a finalist in a national competition during his childhood, but he has since shifted his focus to the uncertainties of teenage life and his future. Alongside Shiki, he is transported to the Digital World, where they encounter their Digimon companions—Agumon, Gabumon, Biyomon, and Palmon. Their journey is later joined by their classmates, Kouta Hirose, who partners with a Guilmon he calls "Yukimura," and Himari Oofuchi, who teams up with a Salamon she affectionately names "Rikka."
