Elude aims to increase awareness of depression and educate people about this serious condition. It is specifically designed for use in a clinical setting as part of a psycho-educational tool to help friends and family better understand what someone with depression is experiencing. By illustrating what depression feels like in contrast to other emotional states (normal and happy), Elude conveys the experience metaphorically. The different areas of the game world represent emotional landscapes linked to various moods, with gameplay shifting in response to these mood changes. The main gameplay—representing a "normal mood"—takes place in a forest filled with "passion" items that respond and function as power-ups when the player interacts with them. Only by being filled with passion can the player overcome the challenges on the path to the treetops, where "happiness" is ultimately reached.
