Mega Man Legends 3, titled Rockman DASH 3 in Japan, was intended to follow up Mega Man Legends 2 and serve as the fourth entry in the Mega Man Legends series. It was revealed for the Nintendo 3DS on September 29, 2010, during a Nintendo press event for the system. Masakuza Eguchi was set to direct the game, with Tatsuya Kitabayashi in the role of producer. The soundtrack was to be composed by Reo Uratani. Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version, known in Japan as "Rockman DASH 3: The Prologue! Showing you the Game's Underbelly Version," was an early iteration of the game planned for release on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. The prototype would have included playable sections featuring Barrett and ten missions. It was initially scheduled to launch alongside the eShop on June 6 but was postponed to allow for enhancements. Capcom had previously stated that if the Prototype Version underperformed, the full game might be scrapped, and ultimately both the prototype and the main game were cancelled. On July 18, 2011, a post was made in the Devroom confirming the project's cancellation. The stated reason was that "the Mega Man Legends 3 project did not meet the required standards." No additional details were provided, and the Japanese Devroom was shut down on August 19.
The game's plot was set to pick up immediately following the events of *Mega Man Legends 2*. Two fresh characters, Aero and Barrett, would have joined familiar faces in an effort to rescue the hero, Mega Man Volnutt, from Elysium. Chris Hoffman of *Nintendo Power* suggested the completed game might have centered around a mysterious artifact called the Klicke Lafonica and the consequences of the Elder System reactivating at the end of *Legends 2*.
