

The main character of the game is Fron, a 16-year-old boy who resides on the island of Monstania. One day, while walking through the woods, he spots an unusual glow. The light guides him to a small open space before vanishing. Fron soon realizes the significance of the light—it was a fairy! Although everyone believed fairies had long vanished, Fron never accepted that. Ever since he was a child, he dreamed of meeting a real fairy, and now that the chance has arrived, he resolves to find her. His girlfriend, Tia, joins him on the perilous quest, where they encounter a mysterious young girl named Chitta and become part of an epic adventure that will eventually bring them face-to-face with the dark force endangering all of Monstania! "Monstania" features a somewhat unique gameplay style for a console RPG. Instead of freely exploring the world, the game follows a linear path, guiding you to the next destination automatically (with only a few instances where you can choose your next move by selecting a dialogue option). Once you arrive at a location, you can't leave until you complete all objectives there, which then advance you to the next area. The main objective in each location is typically a large-scale strategic battle. You direct your party across the battlefield, using melee and ranged attacks, and activating special techniques that cost action points. Unlike most turn-based strategy games, enemies respond immediately after you act with one of your characters, without waiting for a full "enemy turn." The RPG elements are relatively minor: your characters gain levels automatically after each battle. There are also a few puzzles to solve in specific locations.
