Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams serves as the sixth entry in Capcom's overall Onimusha series and the fourth in the main canonical line. While it keeps the action gameplay of its predecessors, it introduces a wider variety of weapons and allows players to revisit earlier stages to unlock new material. The game also features a 3D camera system and the ability to fight continuously with AI-controlled allies who respond to the player's commands. Dawn of Dreams was revealed by Capcom in response to strong fan interest and the realization by several team members that they could enhance the action aspects of Onimusha, drawing from their experience with Shadow of Rome. The title was crafted with experienced gamers in mind, leading to stylized visuals rather than a realistic approach.
The story takes place in ancient Japan, years after the events of Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, and centers on Soki, a warrior who wields Oni powers. Soki embarks on a mission to halt Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who has united Japan with the aid of his demonic Genma forces, and he teams up with various allies who seek the same objective.
