SkyNET is Bethesda's final game in the Terminator series. Initially conceived as an expansion for Terminator: Future Shock, SkyNET ultimately evolved into a standalone title. Key features include an enhanced version of the Xngine engine, supporting the improved 640x480 resolution (with an option to upgrade Future Shock to match), a new solo campaign, and a fresh multiplayer deathmatch mode. In the solo campaign, players must prevent the machines from detonating a recovered nuclear weapon. The story spans seven missions divided into multiple sections and "levels," with time advancing from night to day as the game progresses. The environments are more diverse and interactive than in the first game, featuring stages such as the basement of the Cyberdyne building and a sinking nuclear submarine. Driving and flying sequences return from Future Shock, as do the mission briefings, now presented entirely through full-motion video. The game functions as a prequel to Future Shock, with the advanced technology and weapons from that title not appearing in SkyNET's solo missions. The multiplayer mode supports up to eight players over a LAN and two via IPX. The maps are condensed versions of elements from the solo game, such as city blocks, ruined highways, or open valleys, and many can be played at either dawn or dusk. Vehicles are present in most maps and, unlike in solo play, can be freely accessed and exited. Players can also choose to take on the role of a Terminator, featuring slower movement, increased durability, and the signature red-tinted vision with data overlays.
