Ultima Online stems from Richard Garriott's vision for a fantasy game where thousands of players could interact within a single, shared world. It pioneered the MMO genre, setting the stage for mass multiplayer experiences and proving that MMOs would define the future of gaming.
In the earliest days of the age of darkness, whispered only in the oldest of manuscripts, there existed a world shaped by mystic arts and ancient sorcery: Sosaria. Though born of magic, the people of Sosaria turned their backs on it, for its use was said to taint the souls of the unwary. Yet one man dared to awaken the sleeping power of alchemy. By bending the immense might of the Gem of Immortality to his will, and binding all of Sosaria to his dark influence: Mondain the Wizard. His rule was absolute, as the entire world fell under his merciless dominion. Only the arrival of a stranger spared Sosaria from certain ruin. From where he came, none could say; but his strength and bravery were unmatched. In this stranger lay Sosaria's last hope; only a traveler from the stars could break the world free from Mondain's terrible grip. He would rise as a savior, shattering the Gem of Immortality and vanquishing Mondain. But... a far greater and more insidious darkness was unleashed in the Gem's destruction; for Sosaria was not truly free of the stone's power. The planet remained bound to the Jewel's magic, even as it lay in pieces upon the floor of Mondain's Castle. For within each fragment of the shattered jewel, a perfect reflection of Sosaria remained... Thus is the world in which you are born, live, and die. Britannia, once Sosaria, now exists as a thousand worlds; each with its own people, history, and fate. This Britannia is but one of many, in the vast multiverse known as: Ultima Online.
