We Love Katamari is a third-person puzzle-action video game in which players take control of the Prince, a 5-centimeter-tall boy and the son of the divine King of All Cosmos. Using a magical ball called a katamari, the Prince rolls through various environments, picking up objects smaller than the ball as it grows. Each level challenges the player to gather items to complete tasks assigned by the Prince’s father.
We Love Katamari explores two intertwined narratives: one that humorously reflects on the King of All Cosmos’s response to the overwhelming popularity of Katamari Damacy, and another that reveals the origins of the King himself—how he became ruler, met his queen, and fathered a son. Reaction to the success of Katamari Damacy: After achieving his mission to restore the stars in the sky, the King of All Cosmos is taken aback to learn of the massive following he has gained on Earth. This sets the stage for We Love Katamari, where the King, with the assistance of his son and his son’s cousins, embarks on a new journey across the planet to grant the wishes of his devoted fans—once again collecting objects into a growing Katamari. The King of All Cosmos’s origin: The backstory of the King is revealed through We Love Katamari’s cutscenes, which appear between levels. The King wasn’t always in power; his father, the former King of All Cosmos—also known as the Emperor of the Cosmos or Papa—was the ruler before him. The young future King grew up on a world that was either Earth itself or a planet strikingly similar to it, living in a grand castle atop a hill surrounded by lush green fields. (At the beginning of the game, it is suggested that all events take place in a realm known as “The Great Cosmos.”)
