Cataclysm brings players back to the two main continents of Azeroth for much of their adventures, after spending years in Outland and Northrend. New regions were unveiled, including Mount Hyjal, the submerged realm of Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum, and the Twilight Highlands. The expansion introduces two fresh playable races: the worgen of the fabled kingdom of Gilneas for the Alliance, and the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel from the island of Kezan for the Horde. Flying mounts are now available in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, and a brand-new secondary skill, Archaeology, is added to the game.
The core story of the expansion centers on the return of the malevolent dragon aspect Deathwing the Destroyer, once known as Neltharion the Earth Warder. Last seen in Warcraft II, over twenty years prior, Deathwing has spent that time recovering and scheming a fiery comeback from the elemental realm of Deepholm. His resurgence shatters the dimensional barrier within Azeroth, triggering a massive cataclysm that transforms much of the world’s surface. Amidst this global upheaval, the long-standing conflict between the Alliance and the Horde reignites, with the Horde now led by the ruthless Garrosh Hellscream. As the elemental realms open, chaotic elemental spirits and their tyrannical masters rise to aid the Destroyer and the nihilistic Twilight's Hammer cult in their quest to bring about the Hour of Twilight—the end of all life on Azeroth. The Cataclysm sparks significant political shifts within both the Alliance and the Horde. In the aftermath of the disaster, the Horde’s leader, the orc shaman Thrall, steps down from his role as Warchief to focus on aiding Azeroth as a whole. His position is taken by Garrosh Hellscream, the former leader of the Warsong Offensive. Seeking to expand the Horde’s resources and territory, Hellscream launches aggressive offensives against the Alliance, leveraging the chaos of the cataclysm. In response, human king Varian Wrynn sends his forces to confront Garrosh’s aggression, launching assaults in the Southern Barrens and Stonetalon Mountains, while Garrosh, unlike Thrall, embraces open war with the Alliance. The expansion introduces a variety of new zones for players to explore, along with fresh quests and cinematic sequences to experience. Rise of the Zandalari Faced with the devastating toll on troll lives, the Zandalari tribe embarked on a global mission to reunite their people and restore their once-mighty empire. They have rebuilt the fallen cities of Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman and begun launching violent incursions into lands they claim as their own. This growing troll force aimed to wage a grand war against the other races of Azeroth, but the noble Vol'jin of the Darkspear tribe opposed their brutal ambitions, rallying champions from both the Alliance and the Horde to storm the ancient cities and halt their advance. Rage of the Firelands Following a brutal series of battles, Azeroth’s champions drove Ragnaros the Firelord and his elemental forces from Mount Hyjal. However, threats to the region remained, including druids who had betrayed their allies and allied with the elementals. Fearing another invasion, Azeroth’s defenders launched a bold assault into Ragnaros’ fiery domain: the Firelands. Within the raging inferno of this elemental realm, Ragnaros reached his peak power; only the mightiest champions of the Alliance and the Horde, supported by druidic heroes like Malfurion Stormrage, had a chance to defeat the Firelord. Hour of Twilight At the height of his madness, Deathwing the Destroyer sought to plunge the world into eternal twilight—a lifeless, ruined future. The Dragon Soul, a powerful artifact lost to time, was the only weapon capable of stopping Deathwing, so the guardians of Azeroth—the Dragon Aspects—sent brave heroes through time to recover it. Despite being ambushed by the enigmatic Infinite Dragonflight during their journey through the timeways, the champions succeeded in bringing the artifact back to the present and handing it to the wise shaman Thrall. With his guidance, the Dragon Soul was unleashed against the Destroyer in a fierce battle that raged across Azeroth’s skies and into the churning heart of the Maelstrom at the world’s center. Through the combined strength of the Aspects and their allies, Deathwing’s madness was finally ended. Yet, the remaining Aspects sacrificed their powers to fuel the Dragon Soul, believing their time as Azeroth’s guardians has come to an end and that the heroes of the Alliance and the Horde have proven themselves ready to protect the world.
