Amplitude is a music-based rhythm game and the follow-up to Frequency, released in 2001. Similar to its predecessor, players perform songs by tapping notes across multiple tracks that represent each instrument in the music.
In Amplitude, the player pilots a ship known as a "Beat Blaster," navigating a path that changes in shape and length, featuring up to six tracks. Each track, marked by a unique color, represents a different part of the music—like percussion, synth, bass, or vocals—and is lined with a series of notes. As the player presses buttons that match the note positions on the track, those notes trigger a short segment of the track. When the player successfully activates enough notes in order, the track is "captured," causing that section to play automatically for several bars, allowing the player to focus on capturing another part. The goal is to capture enough sections to make it to the end of the song. If the player keeps missing notes, an energy meter depletes, and when it runs out, the game ends.
