At the start, Bolo asks for a level number (1–9) and a density setting (1–5), after which the game creates a randomly generated rectangular maze with six enemy bases. The higher the density selected, the more walls are included in the maze. The player controls a tank and must destroy all six enemy bases to progress to the next level. Only 1/132 of the maze is visible at any given time; the right side of the screen features indicators showing the player's location, the direction of enemy bases, and the remaining fuel. Enemy tanks continuously spawn from each of the six enemy bases. Different levels introduce various enemy tank types; some move unpredictably, while others actively chase the player. All enemy tanks fire lethal shells. If the player's tank collides with a bullet, an enemy base or tank, or a wall, a turn is lost. A turn is also lost when the player runs out of fuel; however, destroying an enemy base restores the player's fuel. The player begins with four tanks and cannot gain additional ones during the game.
