Darkwatch blends the Western, horror, and steampunk genres, following the tale of Jericho Cross, a rogue gunfighter from the late 1800s American Frontier who becomes a vampire and is coerced into joining the eponymous secret monster-hunting group to battle supernatural threats.
The game’s narrative, voiced by Peter Jason, follows the journey of Jericho Cross, a rogue who becomes a vampire and is recruited by the Darkwatch, an ancient order dedicated to hunting vampires. After accidentally freeing Lazarus Malkoth, the Darkwatch’s most feared adversary, Jericho is forced into service as an elite agent. However, after being bitten by Lazarus, he begins his own transformation into a vampire. The game’s direction—whether Jericho fights to retain his humanity or embraces his dark nature—depends on the player’s choices. The story begins in the Arizona Territory in 1876, with Jericho attempting to rob a Darkwatch train carrying the imprisoned Lazarus Malkoth to the Darkwatch Citadel, a central and recurring location in the game. In the process, he sets Lazarus free in the American West. In what appears to be an act of compassion, Lazarus bites Jericho, bestowing upon him the vampire curse and beginning his transformation. As the game unfolds, Jericho is introduced to Cassidy and encounters Shadow, his undead steed. Eventually, he reaches the Darkwatch Citadel, where he meets General Clay Cartwright, the order’s current leader. Cartwright subjects him to the Torture Maze, a trial meant for Darkwatch Regulators, but modified by Cartwright to be lethal to Jericho. When Jericho survives the challenge, he is assigned missions for the Darkwatch, which range from repairing the damage he caused to retrieving key equipment like the Darklight Prism, a gem that enables vampires nearby to use their abilities and walk in daylight.
