Development of FINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE began in 2005 under the codename "Rapture" and was officially revealed in 2009 for Windows and PlayStation 3. Built using Square Enix's Crystal Tools middleware engine, the game was customized to meet its unique requirements. The development team incorporated visual styles from FINAL FANTASY XI while aiming to create a distinct experience. However, a variety of challenges during production led to significant issues that would later affect the game's success. Plans to release the game on Xbox 360 were abandoned after disputes with Microsoft over Xbox Live integration. Following an initial alpha test and a delayed beta, the game launched on September 30, 2010, and continued until its servers were shut down on November 11, 2012. The launch was met with a largely negative response, with praise for the visuals and soundtrack but widespread criticism of the gameplay, user interface, and the perception that the game was incomplete. The strong backlash from critics and players led Square Enix to remove subscription costs, indefinitely delay the PlayStation 3 release, and ultimately create a complete overhaul of the game titled FINAL FANTASY XIV ONLINE: A REALM REBORN. The game's poor reception had a lasting effect on the FINAL FANTASY brand, with both developers and executives acknowledging that the series' reputation had been harmed.
