Hidden and Dangerous 2, much like its first installment, centers on the British Special Air Service during World War II. It continues the same approach as the original tactical first/third person shooter. The game's LS3D engine was also utilized in the title Mafia. Gameplay features such as voice commands, map control in either plan or real-time, vehicle use, equipment choices, and the first-person perspective were all notably improved from the original. The introduction of capturing POWs added more stealth options, including the ability to obtain enemy uniforms. Mission types range from espionage and sabotage to search and destroy, town liberation, prisoner rescue, retrieving enemy officers and documents, aiding partisans, and assassination. The game's settings span a variety of locations including Norway, Libya, a Norwegian fjord, Burma, Austria, France, and Czechoslovakia. The expansion pack Sabre Squadron introduces additional missions set in France, Libya, and Sicily. Some of these missions are inspired by actual SAS operations, though most take creative liberties with the historical timing and locations of SAS activities. The missions follow a sandbox-style gameplay approach, allowing players to freely explore the map and complete objectives at their own pace and in their preferred order. A real-time strategy element also lets players manage events for planned, sequential tactics or through real-time overhead control.
