J. J. Squawkers doesn't offer a deep narrative, just a short crawl explaining that the villagers have fallen under some kind of spell. The brief opening shows two birds getting attacked as their house explodes, which apparently sets them off on a vengeful mission to take down anything in their path—so that makes sense. You control the two angry birds, Ani Karasukun and Ototo Karasukun (whose names together translate to "crow brothers" in Japanese). In addition to running and jumping, they can launch standard projectiles to defeat enemies or break objects. Starting off, you're armed with a few tomatoes. As you progress, you can swap these out for stronger weapons by collecting items dropped by certain enemies. Available weapons include pumpkins, watermelon seeds, screws, and springboards with red sneakers. Each weapon has its own unique use—screws, for example, fly straight until they hit an obstacle or the edge of the screen, making them great for long-range enemies. Watermelon seeds, on the other hand, don't travel far but fire off in multiple directions at once, making them ideal for dealing with groups of enemies coming from all sides.
