Journey: Journey is a silent narrative conveyed entirely through gameplay and visual-only sequences. The player's character starts at the edge of a small dune in a sprawling desert. Climbing to the top, the character spots a distant, towering mountain with a glowing fissure at its peak. As the character moves closer to the mountain, they discover the ruins of a once-flourishing civilization, now buried beneath shifting sands. Scattered across the ruins at the end of each section are resting stones where the traveler pauses and experiences visions of a mysterious, white-robed figure in a circular chamber. The walls are covered in art that depicts the rise and fall of the civilization, paralleling the player's own journey. As the player explores the remnants of a vast city at the mountain’s base, they must also face ancient, hostile automaton weapons left behind from the war that destroyed the civilization. A vision reveals the traveler collapsing before reaching their goal, but the traveler persists. Eventually, the traveler reaches the mountain and begins the climb, facing harsher conditions as the weather turns colder, with deep snow and fierce winds. Still far from the glowing fissure, the traveler falls and collapses in the snow. Six white-robed figures appear and restore the traveler’s strength, enabling them to reach the mountain’s summit and step into the glowing crevice as the screen turns white. The player then watches the credits roll over the final cinematic. This scene shows a shooting star emerging from the crevice and retracing the path the traveler took through the ruins, with brief glimpses of other robed travelers making their way toward the mountain. The star eventually lands at the dune where the journey began, and the player is given the option to restart the game. As the credits finish, the player sees the usernames of the other travelers who joined them on the journey.
