Assault Squad is mainly a real-time tactics game, but it leans more toward strategy compared to its predecessors, thanks to the removal of "fixed force" scenarios (meaning no reinforcements). The game is powered by a detailed simulation that keeps track of ammunition and fuel levels, individual unit inventories, cover and visibility, realistic tank combat with shell penetration and deflection, field of view, and many other elements. Although Assault Squad is focused on multiplayer, the new co-op Skirmish mode can be played offline without needing a teammate. Like previous entries in the series, Assault Squad features a "direct control" option that lets players take over any unit on the battlefield. This provides precise control during combat, such as timing grenade throws and targeting specific areas of a tank. Multiplayer is handled through the GameSpy client and includes an integrated Elo rating system. Matches can be played across a wide variety of maps and among the game's five playable factions. Additional multiplayer maps are being released as downloadable content.
