Monster Rancher is a PlayStation game launched in 1997 and serves as the inaugural title in Tecmo's Monster Rancher series. It centers around the creation, training, combat, and breeding of monsters.
While it's possible to obtain monsters through in-game methods, the series is best known for its feature that allows players to acquire new monsters using Compact Discs (CDs). Any playable CD can be used, and the game generates a monster based on the data it contains. Some CDs yield special monsters; for example, certain Christmas music albums will produce a "Santa"-type monster. Once a player has two or more monsters stored, they can combine them to create a new monster that inherits traits from both "parents." After obtaining a monster, players can raise it into a powerful fighting machine. Six key stats determine a monster's performance in battle: Power boosts physical attacks, Intelligence supports and resists energy-based attacks, Life dictates the monster's health, Skill influences accuracy, Speed helps avoid enemy strikes, and Defense lessens damage from physical attacks. Monsters can train by completing nearby chores or by being sent to expert trainers, where they may learn new attack techniques. The main way to progress in the game is by participating in monster fighting tournaments. During battle, each monster has a set of attacks, with some moves usable only at close range and others from a distance. Players don't control the monster directly but can command it to move closer or stay back and use the appropriate move based on the current range.
