In the style of the original Pac-Man arcade game, the main goal of each level is to lead Pac-Man through a maze, consuming dots, special food items, and power pellets that temporarily turn Pac-Man's foes, the Ghosts, into something he can eat. The jump mechanic from Pac-Mania makes a comeback, helping Pac-Man avoid dangers and dodge enemies. Certain levels include hazards like lethal boulders, animals that slow or harm Pac-Man, and explosive attacks. Every few rounds, a bonus mini-game appears, offering the chance to earn extra points (with 50,000 points granting Pac-Man an additional life). The mazes themselves come in a wide range of designs and structures, including cylindrical layouts, canopies, bridges, pyramids, and walls that let Pac-Man move vertically. The game introduces more advanced events compared to its arcade version, such as gathering a set number of pellets to open new sections of the maze. Players can also watch short intermission videos before each new level, and the game allows for non-narrative play on select levels. Additionally, the game supports online multiplayer for mini-games.
At the start of the game, under the command of the sinister Mollusc, Ghosts Inky and Clyde steal a powerful magical item called the Artifact, which has long protected Pac-Land from darkness. The Mollusc destroys the Artifact in a massive burst of energy, scattering its four shattered pieces across time and space. As Pac-Man, your mission is to recover each of these pieces from the now-ghost-ridden eras and reunite them in the present. To aid in this journey, Professor Pac-Man hastily builds an unpredictable Time Machine. Pac-Man first explores four distinct time periods: the prehistoric age, Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages, and the Wild West. Though the Time Machine occasionally misfires, sending Pac-Man to unintended destinations, he eventually manages to collect one piece of the Artifact in each era. However, before he can return to the present, the Time Machine breaks down once more, transporting him to a fifth time period: the future. Professor Pac-Man explains that a different energy source is required to bring Pac-Man back from this point. In the future, Pac-Man reaches the Reactor Core and taps into its power, enabling him to travel back to the exact moment just after the Mollusc shattered the Artifact in the game’s opening. Aiming the restored Artifact at his enemy, Pac-Man unleashes a powerful beam of light, destroying the Mollusc and celebrating his hard-earned victory.
