Shadow Hearts: From the New World is the third installment in the Shadow Hearts franchise. This game marks a shift from the European setting of its predecessors, taking place in the "New World"—the Americas. While it is not a direct continuation of the earlier titles, it exists within the same universe. The story follows a group of characters as they explore strange "windows" that unleash dangerous monsters. The gameplay remains consistent with the series' core mechanics, including the use of the Judgment Ring to determine the outcomes of most battles and various in-game actions. A new "Stock" system has been introduced, enhancing the party member combination attacks from Shadow Hearts - Covenant and allowing for double attacks. The "Stock" system is activated by filling a character's stock gauge through performing or receiving an attack. Up to two stocks can be stored at once. These stocks can be used in multiple ways, such as executing a Double attack (where a character takes two actions in a single turn) or initiating a Combo, which uses one Stock. A Double Combo, on the other hand, requires two Stocks. The Judgment Ring system remains largely unchanged from Shadow Hearts: Covenant, with ring customization and new ring effect items still available. Magic returns through the Stellar Charts system, where characters equip Stellars onto their charts. These charts are based on the constellations of the twelve zodiac signs. Completing and filling all Stellars on a chart rewards the player with the Melt Crest Stellar, the most powerful non-elemental spell in the game. Fusion mechanics return, though with a different approach. Unlike Yuri, who could transform into various demons as a Harmonixer, Shania forms spirit pacts with Guardian Spirits to draw their power. She can transform into four different forms, and by collecting and upgrading fetishes—statues of various animals—she can learn new techniques. Photography plays a more significant role in this game. Johnny can gather enemy data by taking pictures, and the resulting snap cards can be traded for rewards. Additionally, Johnny can tap into the power of Malice to transform, though this ability becomes available later in the game.
The game is set in North America during 1929 and introduces two new protagonists: Johnny Garland, a 16-year-old from New York, and Shania, a 21-year-old Native American woman who possesses fusion abilities similar to Yuri and Kurando from earlier Shadow Hearts titles, though she is not a harmonixer. Unlike them, she forms pacts with spirits rather than transforming into demons. The story starts with Johnny, a private investigator, being hired by a man named Gilbert to locate a person called Marlow Brown. When Johnny finds the man, a mysterious 'window' suddenly appears, and a monstrous creature emerges from it. The game then follows Johnny, Shania, and their allies as they work to uncover the truth behind Gilbert and his schemes. At the same time in Brooklyn, a severely injured fugitive is being hunted by the police. He is saved by a mysterious woman who easily defeats his pursuers and heals his wounds with the 'Kiss of Malice.' Her true motives remain unknown, and she never speaks a word. The fugitive, who calls himself 'Killer,' refers to her as 'Lady' and begins following her wherever she goes. Shania later joins forces with Johnny, along with her guardian, Natan, to investigate the strange events Johnny has encountered. They travel to Arkham University, where they meet Gilbert, who reveals his plan to open the Gate and unleash Malice upon the world. Gilbert later allies with Lady and Killer to carry out his ambitions. Johnny continues his mission to stop Gilbert, meeting new companions along the way. These include: Frank, a zany ninja; Ricardo, a lone guitarist; Master Mao, a cat who specializes in Drunken Fist; and Hildegard Valentine, the sister of the vampire brothers Joachim and Keith Valentine from the Shadow Hearts series. Together, Johnny and his allies journey across the world to thwart the plans of Gilbert, Lady, and Killer. Along the way, Johnny discovers a shocking truth: he was revived using the Emigre Manuscript, and Lady is actually his sister, Grace Garland. Their father had brought them back to life after they were lost in an accident, but he was later killed by Grace, who transferred all her Will into Johnny in exchange for his Malice. This explains why Lady is silent—she has no memories and acts only on the Malice within her. An intense battle with Killer triggers Johnny's "Awaker" abilities, and Lady calls out Killer's name for the first time. The ritual to open the Gate of Malice is in progress, and Johnny is determined to stop his sister. The team faces off against a Malice-powered Gilbert in a final showdown before the ultimate confrontation with Lady. In the end, Lady is defeated by Johnny, who delivers the final blow, and she vanishes along with Killer's body. Months later, Johnny receives a new case from his detective agency and begins his investigation. The game offers two possible endings: the Good Ending and the Bad Ending. In the Good Ending, Shania walks out of the agency with Johnny. In the Bad Ending, Shania watches from a distant building with glowing red eyes, a sign that Malice has consumed her. The Good Ending can be achieved by maxing out all of Shania's fetishes, including those from optional fusion encounters.
