As the first title in the Tetris: The Grand Master sub-series, this game follows the familiar mechanics of other Tetris titles but shifts the focus from simply enduring as long as possible to pushing the player to reach the highest level and score in the shortest time. The Grand Master series pioneered several gameplay innovations that are now present in its sequels and numerous other Tetris adaptations.
The difficulty and level rise each time a new block lands on the playing field and when a line is cleared, up to a maximum of 999. On levels where the last two digits are 99 and on level 998, the level only increases after a line is cleared. As the level progresses, the speed at which the blocks descend increases, eventually reaching a point where they fall to the bottom instantly—known as 20G. At 20G, players have just a split second to position each piece before it locks into place. The main objective is to achieve a high rank, which is determined solely by score. The top rank, Grand Master, is only awarded when a specific score is reached within a set time limit. If two players have identical scores, the one who reached that score more quickly will be ranked higher on the leaderboard.
