The game opens by prompting the player(s) to select a difficulty setting, which not only increases enemy strength and weakens the player but also places higher difficulty choices in later stages (referred to as "galaxies") with added powerups. The simplest difficulty places the player at the first stage with no advantages. The player controls a tank with a continuously depleting fuel supply and must maneuver through multiple levels (14 in the arcade edition) from the bottom to the top, facing various obstacles and foes. During the journey, the player can collect powerups such as fuel, stars (used as currency), shields, and two kinds of sub-weapons: smart shots (guided missiles) and bombs (explosive rockets). Each stage contains a key that unlocks a door at the top, leading either to the next stage or a special hub filled with multiple powerups. The player must escape this hub within 10 seconds or risk losing half their fuel. Once the hub is cleared, the player(s) move on to the next station. At times, the player(s) will encounter a boss that must be defeated to progress. Regular shots are useless, so the player must determine the right moment to purchase sub-weapons to significantly improve their odds of success. After defeating a boss, the player(s) can proceed to the end of the stage. Between stages, the player is taken to a shop where they can buy upgrades and items using stars, such as enhancements to tank speed and firepower. Any damage inflicted on the tank reduces the shield level. Buying a shield greatly minimizes damage, limiting it to just a small portion of the fuel gauge per hit. When fuel runs out, the tank's speed slows dramatically and a 10-second countdown begins. If no fuel is acquired before the timer ends or if the player is hit during the countdown, the tank explodes and a life is lost. The arcade edition, in addition to offering dual joysticks for each player, featured three unique contest stages, each containing one contest star. With three contest stars and nine regular stars, the player(s) could enter a time-limited contest stage with a chance to win a T-shirt. A later version of the game removed the contest stages and stars.
