The adventure begins in the coastal village of Sorpigal-by-the-Sea, located on the eastern side of the Peninsula. A group of raiders arrive by ship, determined to reach the city of Karthal in order to deliver their mentor’s remains to a temple there. Upon their arrival, they meet a cryptic figure named Dunstan, who informs them that Karthal has been sealed off from outsiders due to a coup—and that Sorpigal has also been cut off following a series of strange disappearances and disturbances. Assisting the local garrison, the raiders clear a spider infestation from the town’s well, restoring order and opening the town once more. They then tackle a naga-infested lighthouse, uncover a cult operating in the area, and deal with bandits in the surrounding forest. Impressed by their efforts, the garrison captain sends the raiders to Castle Portmeyron to meet the new governor, Jon Morgan. However, they find the castle overrun by brigands and militia. After battling through the invaders and rescuing the governor, the group agrees to help investigate the Peninsula’s growing unrest and also deliver a letter to the pirate king, Crag Hack, in hopes of securing a truce. The raiders first travel to the Elemental Forge, an ancient structure at the heart of the Peninsula, where they investigate a dark elf presence in the tower. They then head to Seahaven and the nearby forest to meet with Lord Kilburn, who helps them analyze the handwriting of a letter found on the militia that attacked the castle. The handwriting is traced back to the former governor, Montbard, who is hiding in the Lost City, a long-abandoned subterranean ruin. The group ventures underground, defeats Montbard, and returns to Morgan, who is curious about how his predecessor was able to fund his forces. Regardless, he sends the raiders to Karthal to locate his missing spy, a man named Falagar. Sneaking in through the sewers, the group discovers that Falagar was an ambassador in the city and eventually gain access to Karthal through his mansion, just as the city reopens its gates to outsiders—where they once again encounter Dunstan, who reveals this development. Within Karthal, the raiders meet Hamza, a former member of the group that seized control of the city. He is now leading a resistance against the current leader, Markus Wolf, whose ruthless Black Guard mercenary force has taken Falagar to a prison in the slums. The raiders are tasked with gathering information about the prison and obtaining a key to the sewers, then orchestrating a rescue mission. Falagar, once freed, reveals that Dunstan had a role in the coup. After relaying this information to Morgan, the governor asks the raiders to dig deeper into Dunstan’s past, leading them to Shiva, a former raider and old friend of Morgan. She explains that Dunstan changed after an ill-fated attempt twelve years ago to enter the Tomb of a Thousand Terrors, an event in which only she and Dunstan survived, after which they went their separate ways. The raiders travel to the mountains and enter the tomb, only to find themselves trapped once more by the same dark elf they had encountered in the forge. Inside, they face a host of shadowy creatures and discover the corpse of Duncan, as well as a group of dark elves. This leads to a shocking revelation: Dunstan died in the tomb, and he and his fellow raiders had unintentionally released a faceless entity named Erobos, a master assassin who was imprisoned by his own kind after the Elder Wars. Erobos took Dunstan’s identity, left him to die, and began a plan for revenge, seeking to ignite a war across the Peninsula. The dark elf they encountered is one of Erobos’s servants. With this knowledge, the raiders return to Morgan to share the truth.
