Unlike in most other shoot 'em ups, power-ups are absent. All weapons are accessible right from the start. However, each weapon can "level up," growing stronger as the player uses it to earn points. There are seven weapons available at any time for the player to choose from: The game is built around the idea that there's nearly always an ideal weapon for every scenario. Bosses are structured with multiple "sections," and destroying all of them before the boss's "core" results in bonus points. Choosing the correct weapon for each boss is crucial for securing these rewards. For instance, a boss might have two sections on opposite sides of the screen. You could quickly move to one and attack it with a vulcan, or stay centered and strike both at once using the side bombs. This strategy improves your chances of earning the bonus before the time runs out and the boss explodes. The game gives extra points to players who "chain" kills of enemies of the same color—red, blue, or yellow. When a player eliminates three enemies of the same color in succession, they receive a points bonus. This also helps weapons upgrade more quickly.
